Private Aviation: What it Takes to be a Flight Attendant

Besides the aesthetic luxury that a private jet offers, the exceptional level of hospitality from the onboard crew are what completes the entire experience. Flight attendants on private aviation jets differ from your average cabin crew. It’s because there is much more training involved and more qualifications required.

Whether it’s an empty-leg flight or a bespoke scheduled route, private travel is managed by some of the most experienced flight attendants in the industry.

Flight attendant certification

Airlines provide rigorous flight attendant training programs that typically last between three to six weeks. This training prepares you for a number of circumstances that could happen onboard, including first aid training, how to deal with threats, and how to survive at sea and in treacherous weather conditions.

You must understand various airport codes, make in-flight announcements and perform routine job duties whilst onboard, ensuring all passengers feel comfortable and safe. 

You must also successfully pass your training to become a flight attendant, with airlines typically requiring a 90% pass grade.

Experience

The relevant experience is required to be considered as a flight attendant. Many airlines require candidates to have a minimum of two years of experience in hospitality, customer service, or sales.

Ideally, you will have experience spending long hours on your feet and providing exceptional levels of customer service. You will also be required to be flexible, a problem solver, and have the ability to handle high-pressure situations.

Language and communication skills

You must be fluent in English to become a flight attendant, as English is the language of aviation. All communication onboard must be in English to avoid any communication issues in the case of an emergency.

You must be able to communicate clearly with both your colleagues and passengers, delivering precise, straightforward instructions when necessary.

Customer service skills

When working onboard a private jet, your customer service skills must be second-to-none. Private passengers are paying for first-class service, expecting an entirely personalized experience.

You’ll take care of any dietary requirements and will ensure that the passenger’s preferred choice of snacks and beverages is available onboard. You will also be expected to go out of your way to accommodate any requests they may have in a timely and friendly manner.

Safety conscious

Flight attendants must be fully trained in health and safety in case a medical emergency arises onboard. In-flight emergencies and accidents can occur at any time, so it’s important to stay vigilant. 

Injuries can be caused by turbulence, luggage falling from an overhead cabin, or a passenger receiving burns from hot liquids. 

Alternatively, a passenger may have health issues – these could include fainting, allergic reactions, and heart attacks. Flight attendants are well-equipped to deal with these situations onboard.

Attending to clientele within the private aviation industry is an integral part of the luxury experience. As well as excellent levels of professionalism, dedication, and an overall passion for aviation, private flight attendants require elite standards of training and qualifications. Private air travel is often considered the height of exclusive experiences, and it is the responsibility of the cabin crew to ensure that such a luxury concept becomes a reality.
